This blog is now entering its third manifestation. First, it was a travel journal, created so people could follow us on our journeys around Europe and see our pictures. That worked well. We posted often and it was well-appreciated. This blog's second incarnation was everything the first wasn't. It wasn't interesting, we were never inspired to write, and it had no real objective or direction. This third (and hopefully final) incarnation will serve two interconnected but distinct purposes: it will chronicle our continuing journeys (more on that later) and serve as a space for us to discuss our ideas, dreams and beliefs. The posts will be more frequent and will be either in a journal format, talking about our plans and activities (again, more on this later), or in essay format. Ultimately, we want you to just enjoy the blog and be able to follow along with our lives.
Where we are: We are leaving Minnesota in 3 weeks. Allison is leaving her PhD program, Luke is leaving his job as an administrative assistant. We think this is a change for the better. We miss friends and family and the region we grew up in and we were never really able to 'settle' or 'fit in' here.
Where we're going: We are moving back to Maine. While we have no real, distinct immediate plans, we have a fairly well-thought-out 5 year plan: We hope to develop the skills (and funds) necessary to start a small farming operation and on-site farm-to-table restaurant. Ultimately, we hope to do a lot more, but right now we're focusing on learning and saving money.
Why we're going: Our philosophical development has led us here. In an effort to live as much in harmony with the world as possible, we want to eschew the suburbs for the countryside, exchange the rat race for a slower, simpler pace, and move beyond the egotistic immediacy of consumerist society in favor of a far more fulfilling and responsible lifestyle. Along the way, we hope to give something practical and philosophical back to our immediate and extended communities, improve the health of the planet, and live as God and nature intended.

Good for you! Join Mofga, get mentored, there are plenty of bright, imaginative people doing projects like you describe in northern New England. Lots going on here - the more the merrier. I'll be happy to be neighbors! This is a very special cultural place. Read Richard Louv's new book, The Nature Principle. Good processing! Let's talk! Plenty of work to be done! xo Janet
