We got up super early this morning and did the whole airport thing (including the usual 'sit around for an hour once you get through security--including eating breakfast). Our flight was totally OK, with no delays at all. It was a fairly uneventful flight overall, though the highlight was definitely flying over the Alps. They seem to go on forever in all directions--it was a very impressive sight, indeed. We actually saw a lot more of them from the plane than we did during our Christmas trip. After landing and getting to our hotel, we took a much needed nap before heading out on the town to see what we could see in the remaining daylight hours. We caught our first glimpses of the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, the Pantheon, and the Piazza Navona. We were lured into a little food and drink shop where we sampled various types of Limoncello--yummy! We met several members of our group for dinner, which was large, Italian, and delicious (including a huge antipasti plate). After dinner, we ventured over to Trevi Fountain as a group, which was really quite stunning in the dark. Others who had been to Rome (and Trevi Fountain) before commented on how much less crowded it was in January than when they were last there in the summer. The absence of totally suffocating crowds certainly makes navigating the beautiful sights and historic monuments all the more enjoyable and easy. Following our Trevi experience, we found a place to get gelatto (Italian version of ice cream), which was a wonderful end to a rather pleasant evening."
